Society’s Choice was honored to be invited to the third annual prestigious award ceremony “Puglia’s Italy Award of Excellence in America”, hosted by The Puglia Center of America. It was held on October 3rd at the beautiful and famous Columbus Citizens Foundation, the most famous Italian American Foundation in US.
The Puglia Center of America promotes the Puglia region of Italy in all its aspects, especially in the creation and exchanges of cultural, tourist and educational assets between the Puglia region of Italy and the United States of America. They organize cultural events that serve to support global objectives, as the United Nations Millennium Development Goals, missionary and humanitarian projects aimed at fighting cancer.
The Puglia Center of America has established partnerships and joint projects with institutions and various departments within the United Nations, the Governments of the City of New York and the Westchester County, the Manhattan Borough Government, Universities of Fordham, Columbia and Amherst of Massachusetts, the Italian Commission of UNESCO and the Chamber of Deputies of the Italian Parliament and the Region of Puglia.
The Puglia Center of America award is recognized to the outstanding contribution of personalities born or raised (or which relatives or parents were born), in the sunniest region of Italy, Puglia.
Current advocates of the Puglia Center of America in 2013 are Hollywood Actor Joe Mantegna, representing the United States, and Actor and UNICEF Goodwill Ambassador Lino Banfi, representing Italy.
Joe Mantegna (star of the CBS series Criminal Mind), was the recipient of this prestigious award in a special edition held at the Italian Cultural Institute of Los Angeles, on May 3, 2013.
Recipients of this award ceremony were:
~ H.E. Ambassador Joseph Torsella, US Ambassador to the UN Management & Reform and was introduced by H.E. Daniele D. Bodini, Permanent Representative of the Republic of San Marino to the UN.
~ Mr. Mauro Romita, President of Castle Oil Corporation was introduced by The Most Rev. Gerald Walsh, Auxiliary Bishop of the Archdiocese of New York.
The ceremony commenced with a brief introduction by Maestro Luciano Lamonarca, President of the Puglia Center of America who graciously introduced the special guests and award recipients for the evening. Brief speeches were given by Hon. Fucsia Nissoli, Representative of the Italian Parliament for Center and Nort America and Mr. Louis Tallarini, Chairman of the Columbus Citizens Foundation.
Special guest and honoree American actor Tony Lo Bianco, received the Lifetime Achievement Award, and was especially recognized for his last theatrical work “The Little Flower”, where he portrays the former Mayor of New York, Mr. Fiorello La Guardia (whose father was born in the City of Cerignola, in the Province of Foggia, in the South East Region of Italy, Puglia).
The lovely ceremony concluded melodiously with a fantastic solo performance by Maestro and tenor Luciano Lamonarca.
